An online petition has been launched urging the BBC to employ the business graduate they mistakenly shoved on to live television.

Guy Goma from the Conga had arrived at television centre to be interviewed for a job as a data support cleanser.

Producers mistook him for Guy Kewney, the editor of Newswireless.net, who was supposed to be speaking as an expert on BBC News 24 about the Apple vs Apple court case.

A rather confused Mr Goma was whisked onto the news set and quizzed live on air by presenter Karen Bowerman, while the real Guy was waiting patiently in another reception.

Following his ordeal Mr Goma, who has now become an overnight celebrity, discovered that he had not got the job he had applied for at the corporation.

And now fans have set up an online petition for Mr Goma, which reads: "We, the fans of Guy Goma, would like to support Guy's application for a full-time position within the BBC, following his recent application.

"Guy was mistakenly interviewed live on TV, rather than sitting the job interview he was in the building to attend. We urge the BBC to give Guy the job he applied for, or a better one. Sincerely, The Undersigned."

The petition can be signed at the guygoma.com website, where fans can watch Mr Goma's television debut, leave their comments and keep up-to-date with the latest Guy Goma news.
