Pupils at a number of schools in the Aberdeen area and their parents or guardians will be able to learn about a useful reading project following the launch of a new website.

The Aberdeen Reading Bus project is set to begin in the autumn term 2006, initially in the St Machar area, and aims to help young families, both adults and children, develop their literacy skills and enjoy reading.

To give people all the details of the project, an interactive website has been established by designer Russell Ward. It includes drawings by pupils at some of the schools involved in the project and is full of colour.

Among the other website features are details of the fundraising campaign to extend the project, a short film of children talking about what the reading bus has to offer and a section containing all the media coverage the scheme has received.

Mr Ward said: "The feedback so far has been overwhelmingly positive - the distinctive way the site translates children's enthusiasm into a useful resource seems to appeal to everyone.

"There's minimal text on each page and I included a simple driving-console navigation, with lots of interactive elements for an easy and fun experience, whatever the user's level of literacy."

The bus itself will have shelving and display space for books, comfortable seating for up to ten people and computers with Internet access.
