Most British Internet users want to access and download information quickly or they will move on to another website, according to research from TelecityRedbus.
A survey of 2,000 regular Internet users for the data centre services provider found that nine out of ten users will give a website three chances to load up and if problems remain they will look elsewhere.
In addition, almost three quarters will wait only 30 seconds before giving up on a website. A probable factor for these results is that 90 per cent of the users questioned have broadband Internet access.
This flexibility is reflected in the fact that just 53.5 per cent of users say they have some loyalty to online brands.
Mike Tobin, chief executive officer of TelecityRedbus, said: "The typical online business is competing against a vast number of alternative suppliers in a global marketplace.
"This research demonstrates unequivocally that on-demand functionality is crucial to success - they are not prepared to wait or give a company another chance if they feel failed by its online shop window."
The survey also revealed that 85.5 per cent of users regularly buy goods online and 63 per cent of people use the Internet to access local government services.
