As part of the review of the funding of political parties, led by former civil servant Sir Hayden Phillips, a new website has been established to obtain public opinion.

This website enables people to comment on a range of political funding issues such as to what extent the state should the state be allowed to fund parties, if a cap on party donations needs to be introduced and whether present limits on general election expenditure should be changed.

It also contains details of the review including terms of reference, the current system of political party funding and frequently asked questions about the system.

Sir Hayden said: "It would be extremely useful for me to hear from as many people as possible. I need the public's input into this review.

"I intend to update the website as the review progresses, taking account of the views expressed."

He will also collect the views of the political parities themselves and the Electoral Commission and once the consultation period is over, a number of recommendations will be made that he believes will improve the system and make it more transparent.
