Manchester Airport is set to introduce wireless information systems for its customer service staff.
An application to stream in-flight information to screens across the airport has been modified to enable the data to be displayed as Hyper Text Markup Language text on handheld computers.
It is hoped that improved efficiency and better customer service will result from the changes.
Aaron Bazler, the airport's network and infrastructure manager, told Computer Weekly: "We are testing now within IT and will roll out over the next few weeks."
In addition to the handheld computer application, the airport has joined forces with T-Mobile to provide Wi-Fi access, an infrastructure which retailers and airlines will be able to use with their own networking requirements.
The airport is also piloting the use of wireless access to enterprise IT systems for laptop users, using a secure connection based on the wireless infrastructure the trial should give users access to Oracle Financials and Lotus Notes.
