Channel 4, a station often associated for development and innovation, is set to broadcast its UK shows live on the Internet.

The station has already acquired the rights to screen online and it set to activate the service on Tuesday June 27th 2006.

Although the channel currently broadcasts some repeated programmes over the Internet, the new project will show the programmes on both media simultaneously, known as 'simulcasting'.

Channel 4 chief executive, Andy Duncan, commented: "It is our stated aim to make Channel 4's public service programming available across all meaningful platforms and to be the first UK broadcaster to begin simulcasting our content on broadband is a significant step towards delivering on this objective."

Vicky Powell, Channel 4 spokeswoman, adds that the channel does not make any programmes, but rather is a publisher of programming, which will mean that special arrangements will have to be made with some producers.
