The north-east is creating an e-leadership council, in order to maximise business potential in the area.
Industry in the region is hoping to take advantage of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and spark a vibrant e-agenda in order to maximise potential growth in various sectors.
The digital sector is currently worth £2.4 billion to the region's economy and the council believes that maintaining this significant contribution is of utmost importance.
The eLeadership Council will advise the regional development agency One NorthEast on a number of ICT infrastructure and technology related areas, attempting to harness existing opportunities to benefit the people and businesses of the region by gaining maximum economic growth from the use of technology.
Kevin Hart, strategic relationship manager for government and finance with Sage and chairman of the council, said: "I am delighted to have been appointed."
"I'm very much looking forward to using my skills and experiences to the full in this new role - and ultimately to making a real difference to the north-east."
Recent ICT seminars have been held in west Wales, in a bid to ensure that the region's businesses are able to maximise efficiency and productivity through the use of digital technology.
