Small firms in the UK could miss out on business by not fully utilising the Internet, according to Lloyds TSB.

Some 30 per cent of organisations are not making use of the Internet's digital accessibility for information, while 13 per cent do not use email, according to the company's research.

Furthermore, 61 per cent of companies surveyed stated that they would not be able to function in the future, if they had not invested in new technology.

Stephen Pegge, Lloyds TSB's business head of communications, said: "If small businesses fail to invest for the future, they may not meet customers' expectations and could find they are soon overtaken by more efficient and more productive competitors."

He added that they limit the use of technology to communication and organisation of information, but the opportunities these tools have for purchasing, production and distribution have been widely overlooked.
