The NHS online recruitment website could save the organisation around £80 million a year.

A new report published by the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement states that Internet activity is one of the "key enablers" which could allow the service to make a total saving of £700 million a year.

The nine key areas all contain suggestions in how Internet and IT appliance could be used to improve process and performance, including a comprehensive analysis of NHS activity and monitoring of performance metrics.

Also discussed in the NHS report are other methods of cost-cutting for acute and primary care trusts, such as reducing unnecessary admissions, increasing the number of operations carried out as day cases, cutting patients' stay in hospital and agency staffing costs.

Government use of technology in other sectors is being keenly examined, with officials in Scotland providing laptops, personal digital assistants and iPods to teachers in a bid to create a virtual learning environment.
