Online banking customers regularly use the service to keep track of their finances, while fewer are heading to their branch.

Almost two-thirds of account holders use the online service to keep up-to-date with their account and 17 per cent log on to check their finances every day.

Account holders aged 55 and over, dubbed silver surfers, were the most likely to bank online, with only 88.5 per cent taking advantage of the service, compared to a UK average of 78 per cent.

Furthermore, silver surfers are also more likely to check their balance online every day, with 25 per cent doing so, which compares to a UK of 17 per cent.

Recent research by Lloyds TSB also indicated that online bankers lead "fuller lives", saving on average 305 days over the course of their lifetime.

Chris Wardrope of Lloyds TSB Scotland life sciences and technology unit commented: "Many people assume that the internet has had a detrimental affect on family life and relationships but in fact the opposite is true in many situations.

"Doing everyday chores online can give people extra time on their hands and the fact that people are preferring to invest this time in their family or in their own personal health by exercising or relaxing is a very positive trend."
