The remote town of Goonhilly, in Cornwall, has become the home of what has been called the world's fastest Internet cafe, representing the recent advancements in British technology.
BT has opened the cafe at the Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station, the largest and oldest satellite station in the world.
Over 80,000 people per year are attracted to the site, which offers games and learning to visitors.
At 100 Mbps, the user can download information at high speeds, over ten times faster than BT's current eight Mbps home broadband connection and 25 to 50 times quicker than many standard broadband connections.
The equipment itself, 12 iMacs with the latest Intel technology, will connect to BT's global Internet Protocol network.
Adrian Hosford, director of corporate responsibility for BT, said: "Connected to the network of the future, what we believe is the world's fastest Internet cafe will allow people to experience for themselves online speeds, which are part of a future enabling us to do all things differently."
He added that the Encyclopaedia Britannica could be downloaded to DVD in 15 minutes, a task which would take a home computer some five hours to complete, Computer Active reports.
