The European Commission is planning to stimulate the growth of European market for online digital content.

It plans to encourage the development of innovative online business models and promote the cross-border delivery of online content services.

The commission has launched a public consultation intro the area, designed to "pave the way for a true European market for online content delivery", which can have a "crucial role" in the growth of the information and communication technologies and media markets.

"The availability and take-up of high-speed broadband connections is making it easier for consumers not only to access a wider range of creative digital content than would have been imaginable ten years ago, but also to create content themselves," stated the commission.

Broadband's ability to handle large amounts of data enables European companies to offer their customers new content and services and create additional markets, it asserts.

The European Commission recently pledged to create an inclusive, barrier-free digital society in Europe.
