The House of Lords Science and Technology Committee is set to investigate ways to improve personal Internet security.

According to the committee, as the Internet and broadband are becoming more widespread, the importance of proper Internet security measures has "never been greater".

Furthermore, the increase in online services such as banking and other services has highlighted the need to keep users safe and secure, the committee states.

The investigation will take into account the nature of security threats to individuals and how well the public understands those threats.

Furthermore, the government's ability to counter cyber-crime will also be evaluated.

Lord Broers, chairman of the committee, commented: "We are doing more and more online, from our weekly grocery shop to banking to downloading music and video and, increasingly, using the Internet to make telephone calls.

"Those who haven’t yet done so are being encouraged to get online - but how many of us know about the risks?"

Many leading Internet software providers are currently working to improve the security of their systems, including Microsoft's latest Internet Explorer package.
