Ucas is extending an online initiative that aims to make it easier for students to apply for their university place by using the Internet.

Earlier this year, the service invited UK online centres to participate in a referral network that enables students to apply for a degree using the Internet, reports the e-gov monitor website.

Once this process was established, applicants could then use the system to track the progress of their application.

Due to the success of the scheme, Ucas has increased the support for the initiative on its own website. Users of Ucas's website can now access a pdf file detailing how to apply for a university place using the online system and find their closest UK online centre.

There are currently around 900 online centres in the UK which aim to give people access to the Internet and email facilities.

UK online centres' website states: "Visiting a UK online centre means you can explore the opportunities that new technologies offer, such as further learning and updating your skills."
