Northamptonshire County Council is planning to use a web-based service to keep track of nutritional standards for children.

The council plans offer the service, provided by Fretwell-Downing Hospitality, initially to a small number of schools, with a full roll-out to take place in the future, Kable reports.

Schools using the online system can ensure that children receive a nutritionally balanced meal by meeting 14 key nutrient standards.

The importance of good nutrition in schools has been highlighted recently, with the government pledging to improve the quality and variety of food available to children.

Catherine Lamb, nutritionist for the healthy food and drink team at Northamptonshire, commented: "Having access to this nutritional analysis technology will simplify the process, particularly as both individual recipes and bought-in products can be analysed."

Ms Lamb added that the system will give the council confidence in their ability to meet the required standards and will reassure parents that their children are receiving "quality, healthy meals".
