The Department for Transport (DfT) is hoping to save money and boost the efficiency and accuracy of its Internet services by improving their infrastructure.

By consolidating the 30 existing websites which it currently operates, the department believes that better customer service can be offered, in addition to providing a sound base for future system enhancements.

Furthermore, officials state that visitors to the DfT website will benefit from improved usability and human computer interaction, in addition to more accurate and consistent information, Publictechnology.net reports.

Neil Campbell, head of e-communications from the DfT, commented: "We have a variety of online sites containing thousands of pages of information which are currently managed by a hugely devolved and skill-varied staff."

Mr Campbell adds that the department has been searching for an online solution to tie the strategy together within a single environment, while providing a good basis to provide for future growth.

The DfT website currently contains a number of web accessibility options and provides a service for accessibility queries.
