A new planning feature on Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council's website aims to make the applications process more efficient.

The council received more than 2,300 planning applications last year and officials believe that the new feature will allow development control officers to access the information more easily.

Allowing a member of the public or council official to search for a planning application by clicking on a map, the service will incorporate over 77,000 records from the past 58 years.

Phil Reynders, geographical information systems and searches manager for the council, commented: "As you can imagine, it took a major effort on behalf of the technicians to capture all these boundaries on computer mapping systems and then administration staff have had to enter all the textual data."

The council's website also features a range of web accessibility options and states that it has achieved World Wide Web Consortium Web Accessibility Initiative AA status.
