The Scottish Executive is hoping to use the Internet to deliver efficiency savings for the planning process.

A £12 million injection of funds has been announced to create the website, which officials believe will also make the process easier for residents, making a wide range of services available online.

Johann Lamont, deputy communities minister, claims that the accessibility of the Internet will mean that the planning process is no longer "off limits" to service users.

"It is a huge boost in making the system more efficient and responsive. That is essential if we are to create a smart, successful Scotland with a growing economy which benefits all."

"There is a great thirst in the public sector to do all we can to provide world-class public services that will help support growth in the economy."

A recent pilot of the scheme, ran in Edinburgh, now receives more than 23,000 visits a month and was recently praised by government officials.
