The UK is leading the way on broadband uptake, according to figures from the European Commission.

According to new statistics released by the body, one in four European households now have access to high-speed broadband connections.

Recent government figures released by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) show that the UK has almost three times more broadband connections than Europe, accounting for 72 per cent of all UK web connections.

The European Commission's information society and media commissioner, Viviane Reding, commented: "This survey provides useful insights into consumer behaviour in today’s constantly-evolving communication services market

"I see these figures – in particular the fact that so many people are satisfied to stay with slow speed internet access – as a challenge to operators and service providers to develop more attractive broadband offers."

National Statistics recently claimed that the emergence of broadband in the UK is vital for the growth of businesses, as e-commerce has an increasing impact on the economy.
