Strong Internet sales are leading to growth in the UK grocery retail market, according to an industry expert.

The strength of e-commerce in the last year has been a major driving force behind an expansion in last two years, claims Nicola Raymond Evans, general manager of beef wholesaler Celtic Pride.

Ms Evans, writing in the Western Mail, cited figures showing that the market rose by eight per cent between 2003 and 2005, from £115 billion to £124 billion.

"These figures demonstrate that spending on food throughout the UK is increasing," Ms Evans remarks.

"Not only is our grocery market rapidly changing, competition is fierce to maintain and increase market share."

The expert comments as her company has recently released a new mail order service available on the Internet, in a bid to attract more custom.

Celtic Pride's online shop sells a wide variety of products to industry professionals.
