A new digital accessibility initiative is to be launched in Ireland, aiming to help older people and those with disabilities.
Tom Kitt, the Republic of Ireland Minister for the Information Society, has announced the creation of the Access, Skills and Content Initiative.
The scheme, which will see more than £1 million invested, could have a positive impact on the lives of many residents by allowing them access to the Internet, Mr Kitt claims.
"Properly and imaginatively used, new technologies can have a very beneficial impact on what people are doing, whether that is in education, at work, or just coping with the challenges and demands of everyday life," he remarked.
"There are a number of aspects to addressing the problem of the digital divide and it is not just about getting access to technology."
Mr Kitt added that all residents should have the "fundamental skills" to use new technologies wherever they can be of benefit and improve their lives.
