Two of the UK's largest educational charities have joined forces in a bid to ensure that children can use the Internet safely.

The e-Learning Foundation and Childnet International are planning to create a wide range of resources for children and parents, to minimise the risk that youngsters could be exposed to.

Furthermore, the charities state that they will be creating the world's first interactive online safety resource for parents.

Valerie Thompson, chief executive of the e-Learning Foundation, commented: "The Internet is an invaluable tool and will play a fundamental role in the future of young people.

"The so-called iGeneration has media experiences, attitudes and preferences that are very different from those of their teachers and parents. There are challenges and opportunities here for all involved."

Ms Thompson added that the Internet offers a "wonderful online world", which children should be able to explore safely.

The e-Learning Foundation aims to help disadvantaged children take advantage of the Internet to helpful educational material which might ordinarily be out of their reach.
