Online government services are beneficial both to the providers and users, a government official has claimed.

The drive to create "smarter" services over the Internet will be a boost to government departments, as well as busy individuals, said the parliamentary under secretary of state Angela Smith.

Ms Smith commented in the wake of the recently-created online school admissions service, which the government believes will save parents valuable time, eGov monitor reports.

"Websites are fast becoming an essential aid for busy parents making important decisions about their child's schooling," she remarked.

"Providing services online also reduces the time council workers spend on administration so they are free to spend more time delivering better quality, value-for-money services."

The official added that the Department for Communities and Local Government will remain committed to modernising council services.

On the Directgov website, parents are able to find out a range of information about the schools and nurseries in their area, while school admissions can be made through the local council.
