Broadband Internet access has become a pivotal part of the UK's economy, according to an expert at BT.

Ben Verwaayen, the chief executive of the group, commented on the wake of his company's ten millionth broadband connection.

The company stated that the UK is one of the fastest growing broadband markets in the G8 - which has resulted in it leading the field in e-commerce and online shopping.

"2007 is beginning with broadband firmly established at the heart of the UK economy, helping businesses to compete and enriching people's lives," remarked Mr Verwaayen.

He added that more than 200 broadband service providers are now available in the UK, which makes it the world's most competitive market - offering "fantastic choice and value for consumers".

Last year, officials at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development claimed that the concept of providing every individual in the world with a high-speed Internet connection was a difficult, but achievable ideal.
