Glasgow City Council has announced that it has saved £9 million by purchasing goods online.

Some 18 months ago, the body joined the eProcurement Scotland (ePS) scheme, which is expected to produce cost savings of £21 million in the first three years of introduction.

These extra funds can then be ploughed back into the improvement of frontline services, the council claims.

John Sherry, Glasgow City Council's head of e-procurement development, comments: "The programme’s success continues to exceed our expectations, bringing mutual advantages to the council, suppliers and the national ePS Scotland Programme."

He added that there was a "massive" potential for other organisations to generate savings, by following the council's lead and purchasing electronically.

Richard Cryer, the University of London's director of finance, recently revealed that a new e-procurement system would be introduced in a bid to streamline purchasing processes and improve efficiency, Computing reported.
