The Internet will become more mobile and offer access to more individuals, the president and chief executive officer of Nokia predicts.

Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo claims that the growth of convergent devices means that individuals across the world will be able to access the Internet at all times, without being tied to a PC.

Nokia states that the market for convergent devices is expected to reach 250 million units by 2008.

"Mobility will be at the core of how the Internet evolves, where people can have access to the people, content and information they want from wherever they are," remarks Mr Kallasvuo.

He adds that individuals in emerging markets may find that their first experience of using the web is via a handheld device, rather than a PC.

These comments have been echoed by Ed Zander, the chief executive of Motorola, who predicted that mobile phones would be at the centre of future communications infrastructures.
