Businesses are failing to provide accessible intranets for their employees due to misconceptions about the importance of intranets and also the importance of accessibility.
Every business can benefit from an intranet no matter what form it takes. Whether it is a large corporate system or a collection of online tools, intranets can make a significant improvement to the day to day running of a business.
However, there seems to be a huge amount of naivety about developing and running intranets.
One of the main overriding problems is that companies do not feel it is necessary to provide organisations with accessible intranets because they know who is using it, yet just because there are no employees with disabilities in the company at the moment does not mean there never will be. Moreover there is a lot more to accessibility than providing for disability. It is not just people who are registered disabled who have accessibility issues.
Due to the misconception about accessibility means that organisations feel that investing in their intranet does not reap any significant return. However the real benefit of an intranet is in productivity improvement. If intranets are created and used correctly time spent finding key information is dramatically reduced, and can act as an effective method of dispersing information. Furthermore accessible intranets can manage workflow and improve communication.
