Pew Internet & American Life Project have identified that 47% of Internet users have searched for information about themselves.

With an increasing number of people using blogs, writing articles or providing contributions, the number of web users searching for what they have personally written or what someone else has written about them becoming a more popular pastime – an increase of 22% from five years ago.

However, the research identifies that it is not a regular occurrence for each individual as just 3% search for themselves on a regular basis while 74% say they have only checked their online presence once or twice.

Over 2,300 American adults were surveyed in the research and most people (60%) said that when they searched on their name relevant results were brought up, however a large proportion (38%) said that their search did not present any information about themselves.
