There are now 12 Wireless City Wi-Fi Internet networks in the UK, BT has announced.

The high-speed broadband systems provide council workers, businesses and residents access to online services, the organisation claims.

BT also notes that consumer demand for the services has been high, with newly-established networks in Nottingham, Sheffield, Bristol, Portsmouth and Glasgow.

Steve Andrews, BT's Chief for Mobility and Convergence, comments: "A number of local authorities are already showing they can improve productivity for their mobile workers ... who would be able to take action quickly and efficiently away from the office."

He added that the benefits of Wi-Fi become more established as a wider range of compatible devices become available.

Presenters of Channel 4's The Gadget Show, impressed by the free Wi-Fi network in Norwich, last year launched a petition to the government requesting that similar services are erected in all major UK towns and cities.
