The European commission (EC) has backed the use of public funding for a new broadband network in North Yorkshire.
Dubbed NYnet, the scheme aims to create a new fibre optic network in the region, offering high-speed access to residents and businesses and having a positive impact on the region's economy.
After examination of the proposals, the EC found that an advanced broadband network would be critical to the advancement of North Yorkshire, as its rural geographical nature has prohibited involvement from commercial entities.
The EC also deemed that the network did not contravene any state aid rules as it is "unlikely to cause undue distortion of competition within the EU".
Neelie Kroes, Competition Commissioner, commented: "It [NYnet] will help the economic development of North Yorkshire by allowing citizens, businesses and government bodies to reap the full benefits of advanced broadband connectivity."
NYnet's creators hope that around 330,000 households and 50,000 small to medium-sized enterprises will be positively affected by the move in Craven, Hambleton, Harrogate, Richmondshire, Reydale, Scarborough, Selby and York.
