Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council has launched a new site designed to boost the safety of the area's youngsters.

Targeting young web users, along with parents and those who work with children, the Barnsley Safeguarding Children portal will be examined today by councillors and volunteers from a local school.

A variety of information is available on the site, including child protection data, free online training courses and advice on parenting.

Additionally, younger users will find links to secure chat rooms, designed to help those facing abuse or bullying, which have been created by national organisations.

Deputy Mayor Councillor Joe Hayward comments: "I am pleased to see a venture such as this being launched for children, carers and parents in Barnsley.

"I feel it is an exciting project that will prove beneficial for all concerned."

Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council also announced the creation of a new e-learning resource at Penistone Library, which features upgraded computer systems aimed at jobseekers and those pursuing avenues of education.
