The government has highlighted the potential of Internet-based information sharing networks to improve public service delivery.

Hilary Armstrong, Minister for the Cabinet Office, has consulted with a number of industry figures in a bid to learn how their websites work to "improve lives".

The move forms part of the government's ongoing review into the ways in which media developments such as the Internet can help to forge links within communities and "help unlock the full potential of this social movement".

"This issue is about enabling rather than monitoring the appetite people have for sharing information," remarks Ms Armstrong.

She adds that the government's objective is to provide individuals with the information necessary to take control of their lives and be as independent as possible.

Last month, government official Pat McFadden stated that the government's IT projects shared the goals of bettering the lives of citizens and empowering them in modern society.
