Cumbria Police have launched a new website which aims to tackle crime and make residents feel safer in their neighbourhood.
Web users in the area are now able to access the Streetsafe portal to talk to a police officer, report incidents or request help, reports The North-West Evening Mail.
Additionally, plans are in the pipeline to create a scheme in which the police will be able to conduct live, secure webchats via MSN.
PC John Irving, a spokesperson for the force, commented: "We want to be more accessible to the local communities and inform them what we are doing to make their communities a safer and cleaner place to live."
He added that a number of local agencies were involved in the project, which had the ultimate aim of returning the "feel safe factor" to residents.
Last year, the Home Office announced that 2005-06 saw a one per cent drop in recorded crime in Cumbria, with a 19 per cent fall in burglary and theft involving vehicles.
