A body which aims to engage with all areas of the community will benefit from enhanced web accessibility, a US expert has suggested.

Sharyn Pittman, the Community Indicators Project Coordinator for the Spartanburg County Foundation, said upgrades that enable visually-impaired users to access a site would help her organisation to garner public response and interest.

"We worked very hard on making our website beautiful to those who could see ... we also wanted it to be beautiful for those who couldn't see," she told The Spartanburg Herald Journal.

Sheila Breiweiser, President of the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind, added that "smart" organisations would realise that failure to incorporate accessibility standards will result in some potential users being excluded.

Accessibility is an increasingly important issue given the high volume of information which is transmitted via the Internet, she concluded.

The Spartanburg County Foundation is a charity that seeks to improve the communities of Spartanburg, South Carolina, by improving arts, culture, health, social services and youth activities.
