Modern technology such as the Internet must be made accessible for all potential users, according to a US Department of Education spokesperson.
Dr Bonnie Jones said that the step must be made in order to facilitate the creation of a "truly inclusive society", reported Internetnews.
"If we can't do this, people with disabilities land on the wrong side of the digital divide," warned Ms Jones.
The expert also called upon the current generation of IT developers to use their skills to foster these ambitions and help to make them a reality.
Benjamin Kepner, Programme Director of Marketing and Strategy for the IBM Human Ability and Accessibility Centre, added that developers can get "ahead of the curve" and provide education professionals with tools to change the teaching methods used.
Last year, while Secretary General of the UN, Kofi Annan called upon the IT community to bridge the digital divide and provide solutions which can be used by all citizens, regardless of disability or age.
