The website of Leeds City Council has been recognised as among the top-ranking in its class across the country by the Society for IT Managers.
Acknowledged as one of the top eight metropolitan council websites "for meeting people's needs", the city council's site scored well across the 16 different criteria related to usefulness and usability that the websites were judged on.
The society's Better Connected 2007 Survey considered every local authority website in its ranking, addressing the availability of services online too, such as the ability to pay your council tax bill through an authority's site.
"The Internet is rapidly becoming one of the main sources of information for people and is increasingly being used for accessing council services, such as paying council tax or finding out about local facilities," said Councillor Mark Harris, Deputy Leader of Leeds City Council.
Leeds City Council's site boasts more than 140,000 visitors each month, who can take advantage of the services such as an a to z, or the currency and information sections, which make navigation around the site easy.
Earlier this month, Leeds City Council announced the winner of a competition related to Internet safety for children, with eight-year-old Sarah Caton triumphing over nearly 300 other entrants.
