US telecommunications providers are falling behind the UK with regards to website accessibility, according to a study by the Customer Respect Group.

However, the body's First Quarter 2007 Online Customer Respect Study of the Global Telecommunications Industry found companies to be making "steady improvement" in the field.

UK telecoms organisations were revealed to be "well ahead of those in North America regarding support for users with visual or mobility disabilities, the criterion known as accessibility".

Furthermore, six of the top ten companies on the "global accessibility list" were found to be based in the UK.

Despite this success US websites fared better for privacy, with UK customers asked for more personal information - often unrelated to their enquiry.

The Customer Respect Group states that user experience is vital - potentially impacting upon the number of web users willing to use the site, the amount they spend and how likely they are to return to the portal for further business.
