The government is aiming to use the Internet to interact effectively with youngsters.

Through a new website, DirectgovKids, children will be provided with information relating to government activity, services and "the world around them".

Aimed at web youngsters between the ages of five and 11, the site has been specifically designed to offer support for education and can be applied in a classroom environment for a wide range of subjects.

Special advice areas for teachers and parents are also incorporated.

Children's Minister Beverley Hughes comments: "Young citizens will be able to find out more about the world around them and how government shapes their day-to-day lives."

She added that this is the first occasion on which a government website has been specifically designed to target children.

The site takes the visual form of a spinning globe, which youngsters can access via a colourful point and click navigation interface, hitting targets such as the school, the town hall and the art gallery, which link to informative characters.
