Advances in technology mean that e-learning could soon play a pivotal role in a child's educational development, one industry body has claimed.

The e-Learning Foundation made the comments as it prepares to offer its spring round of financial grants, which will be provided to projects which demonstrate home access, sustainability through funding and equity of access.

Children spend around 15 per cent of their lives in a school environment, meaning that their "future success" could hinge upon the provision to enable them to learn at home, asserted the organisation.

"Whilst there is a growing preference for portable technologies within schools, fewer than 20 per cent of schools loan computers for home use," it said.

The e-Learning Foundation was established in 2001 and states that it has provided assistance to more than 180 schools, enabling over 34,000 deprived youngsters and families to access new technology.

In last year's funding round, it granted more than £1 million to schools across the UK.
