Shropshire County Council's website has won praise for its level of accessibility.

Built to comply with the World Wide Web Consortium standards, along with those outlined by the Royal National Institute for the Blind, the site was judged to be one of the top 20 in the UK over a number of categories.

The assessment was made by the Society of Information Technology Management, which judged the sites on accessibility, navigability, quality of content, online transactions and timeliness of information.

Mike Owen, Shropshire County Council's Cabinet Member for community wellbeing, comments: "This is a great endorsement for our website, of which we are very proud.

"Our website shows our determination to put our customers at the heart of everything we do."

The site contains more than 7,000 pages, attracting 100,000 visitors and recording 1.5 million visits each month.

Shropshire County Council recently launched a service which enables parents to keep track of their youngsters' school place applications online for the 2007-08 academic year.
