Slough Borough Council has received compliments regarding the accessibility of its site.

Following upgrades which were designed to improve online experience, the council has experienced a rise in the number of visitors and also received positive feedback from both users and professional bodies.

Paul Butler, e-Government Programme Manager for Slough Borough Council, comments: "It's not every day that individuals take the time to contact the council with compliments, but this has been the case with the new website project."

He adds that other councils have also been in touch to enquire how the site was designed, stating that the recognition of peers was pleasing to the authority.

The site was designed to be compliant with the AA standards outlined in the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, with support provided for screen readers and text-only browsers.

In addition, web users can alter font sizes and use access keys to navigate pages - although the council accepts that accessibility is a work in progress and will continue to be improved.
