The University of Toronto's Adaptive Technology Resource Centre has been given a $2.5 million (£1.258 million) grant for its project that aims to make web applications more accessible.

Funds have been provided via an Andrew W Mellon grant and will go towards the Fluid project for inclusive design, a joint initiative also involving York University, IBM, the University of Cambridge and the University of California at Berkeley.

The project's goal is to create an accessible interface for all users - including those with disabilities and varying cultural backgrounds and languages.

Project leader Jutta Treviranus told ITworldcanada: "We want to design a user interface where a person with a disability or alternative language or alternative cultural preference is not excluded."

Along with designing a new interface, the project's creators hope that the information generated will help to create new expertise and knowledge of the field of accessibility, which can then be shared with other projects.
