A website created for patients suffering with kidney disease is proving popular since its inception, it has emerged.

Over the last year, the NHS Lothian portal saw more than one million individuals using it to access the available resources, according to the Scotsman.

Staff, patients and students can all use the site, which was initially created when fears arose regarding the lack of information provided to patients.

Expert members of staff at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary's (ERI) renal unit, including medical and social work professionals, were behind the site's design.

Neil Turner, professor of nephrology at ERI, commented: "By providing patients with access to the information they need online, we are moving forward to a future where patients can access medical information at the touch of a button."

Each page of information available on the site is examined by a renal physician to ensure its accuracy, both before loading and after any amendment.
