A new Wi-Fi network in London is the most advanced of its kind anywhere in Europe, the City of London Corporation claims.
The network will provide broadband access to more than 350,000 individuals who either work in or visit the area, with 95 per cent of the areas owned by the City of London Corporation covered.
Users will be able to access the system with PDAs, laptops, media players and smartphones.
Michael Snyder, Chairman of the City of London’s policy committee, said: "The City of London is the world's leading financial and business centre and has always benefited from a world class communications infrastructure."
He added that this makes it vital for the area to continue to be innovative and progressive in its provision of communications technology.
Wireless networks are also being created, or are already available, in Birmingham, Cardiff, Liverpool, Leeds, Edinburgh, Bristol, Norwich and Westminster as more UK authorities look to offer public sector and business workers web access.
