A greater number of UK adults now have access to high-speed broadband connectivity, according to new figures.

Data from Ofcom, the UK telecommunications watchdog, reveals that more than 50 per cent utilise broadband access - a rise from 39 per cent in the previous year.

This also represents a 700 per cent increase in the last four years, with over 13 million residences and businesses now taking advantage of a broadband connection.

Ed Richards, Ofcom's Chief Executive, commented: "With over half of UK adults now using broadband at home, we have reached a very significant milestone in the development of broadband Britain."

He added that new developments and the healthy level of competition which has been fostered in the UK market are resonating with consumers.

Ofcom's statistics showed that two megabit per second speeds are now available for £15 per month - whereas the same connectivity would cost £50 per month in 2003.

Earlier this year, data from the Office of National Statistics indicated that just under 80 per cent of the UK's Internet connections are broadband.
