The majority of web designers are not able to design sites which are accessible to all, it has been claimed.
These comments were made by Jon Gunderson, the University of Illinois' Director of Information Technology Accessibility, as the institution prepares for a full upgrade of its technology.
"If we don't design for accessibility, we'll be locking a lot of people out of opportunities," he explained to The Daily Illini.
Mr Gunderson also said that the increase in education provision online means that the issue of complying with accessibility standards in order to make a website as inclusive as possible is more important than ever before.
"We want to make sure that web resources are available to everybody, including people with disabilities," Mr Gunderson concluded.
The University of Illinois has undertaken a partnership with other universities around the country to make the web and technological resources available to a wider range of students.
California State University and San Diego State University are also taking part in a similar initiative.
