The New Statesman is applauding organisations which offer high levels of accessibility online.

This year, the publication has made accessibility one of the three key themes in its New Media Awards, which seek to recognise bodies which use technology for the good of society.

Organisations can be given awards for making a difference in their local community or for wider civic benefit.

John Kampfner, the New Statesman's editor, said that the web has a great deal of "power and potential" as a force for good.

"We are delighted to be able to champion those who are using technology to make a real difference to society," he remarked.

One of the nominated projects is My Neighbourhoods, a networking portal that seeks to help individuals to learn more about the people and area that surround them.

The service's creators hope that UK residents will gain a greater sense of community by using the site.
