A website designed to promote walking throughout London to tackle climate change has scooped a national award.

The portal, Walkit.com, created by Jamie Wallace, has won the Climate Change and Environmental Efficiency category in the National e-Well-Being Awards.

According to community website London SE1, three-quarters of the site's users have praised the design, ease of use and speed of the site - with 90 per cent willing to recommend it to friends.

The site provides detailed instructions of how to walk between locations - which may be closer than the individual realises - rather than relying on cars or other transport methods.

Last year, Mr Wallace told the BBC: "The idea came from watching colleagues dive into the tube or taxis, while knowing that their destination was within easy walking distance."

Walkit.com's creators claim that in 2005 to 2006, the Department for Transport spent £193,064.57 on taxis - although they admit that these statistics may not be an accurate representation of usage.
