Companies need to make sure they remember the basics, such as good usability, when designing a website, an expert has advised.

Internet expert Jakob Neilsen said that it was important to take the principles of usability and good design into account, the BBC reports.

Among these practices are employing good search tools, using text that is free from jargon, usability testing and considering design before the website is put together.

Making a site easy to use can be as important than making webpages more dynamic with web 2.0, he explained.

"They should get the basics right first," Mr Neilsen advised.

Writing for Bytestart, another Internet expert, Adam Keenan, recently underlined the importance of high levels of usability in creating a successful company website.

Features such as a contact page to enable the user to keep in touch with the organisation could keep users coming back for more, he added.
