Websites which provide health information should be made accessible to avoid discrimination against users, it has been claimed.

Jerome Martinez, President of ophthalmology pharmaceutical specialist Novagali Pharma, said that accessibility is a key factor for his business as many patients log on to the site to obtain product details.

It is therefore "essential that all the information contained in our website has to be accessible to everyone without discrimination", said Mr Martinez.

Novagali recently completed an upgrade of its site, ensuring that all accessibility standards are now met, the company claims.

Mr Martinez added that the new, improved portal would enable the site to be accessible, regardless of the "visual capacity of the visitor".

The site has been designed to be used by individuals with visual and cognitive impairments, while also being compatible with assistive technology.

All of the pages have been created to comply with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0, with text versions of .pdf files available along with mouseless navigation options.
